We will be closed on Monday in celebration of the holiday and starting Tuesday June 1st, we will be switching to our summer hours:

Monday through Thursday 10-5pm

Friday 10-4

and

Saturday 10-2pm.

Please make a note of the change. In September, we will resume our regular hours.

Summer camps are starting to fill, so if you are interested, you need to come in and sign up. We can take a credit card over the phone to hold your spot. The Camps are listed on my calendar on the website in the month of July. We are currently working on Augusts camp times.

September 2011 we will be offering "Kids can Sew Too" again and on different days. I will make you aware of the times and days as it approaches.

I 'm apparently not the only one who loves to make handbags!! Our Bag-a-licious club has been the most fun this year and here are some highlights from our most recent bags made...

The making of a Super seamstress! Natalie came to us to learn to sew and by the end of the week she had made everything from simple scrunchies to pj pants and a pillowcase and right on to this handbag which is an intermediate project, but this child was a natural! OUR BUSY 2 WEEKS!!

The last two weeks have flown by and boy did we have a great time along the way! Winter's pillowcase Happy Birthday Angelia!

The girls came in eager to sew and sew they did! Each made pillow cases, pj pants, snap wallets, windsoxs, American girl doll pillows and blankets, hair scrunches, raggedy reverse applique pillows, and beach bags! Ages ranged from 6 through 12. All sewed very well and all left with finished projects everyday. These girls caught on so fast, I had to create more projects for them by Wednesday because they had completed the planned projects and were eager for more!! Kids are amazing sometimes aren't they? Enjoy the pictures....

Victory Baptist Church Day Camp! Each girl came in to learn how to sew, thread the machine, wind a bobbin, cut out there patterns, and sew snap wallets!

It’s dinner party night.

Yes, sweaty and flushed, you run around baking bread and breaking eggs before that doorbell bing-bongs, the guests ping-pong, and everyone sits down to eat up your delicious homemade meal.

Of course, you enjoy the dinner — you love it, it’s great — but you don’t really enjoy it. No, you’re running around refilling glasses, folding napkins, scooping seconds, warming pies. You’re cleaning crumbs, wiping babies, and keeping an eye on the kids table. While everyone sits and chats you’re a Tasmanian Devil of dining room insanity, whipping into a whirlwind and making sure everyone enjoys their meal.

By the end, you’re completely and utterly exhausted. Your bones are bleeding, your skin is stinging, and your body is aching for a tender hug from a cushy couch.

This is why it’s great when your guests offer to do the dishes after the meal.

“No, no, no,” you say. “Sit down, sit down, sit down.”

But they insist, but you insist, but they insist, but you insist, but they insist … and then finally you just stare back at them with hollow, broken eyes and give up.

Now you crashland on the cushy couch as your guests fill the sink and bubble up the suds. And what a beautiful moment of sweet relief it is when you walk back in there and see everything sparkling clean.

Plus, for the rest of the week to get to enjoy the Treasure Hunt that comes with finding your own dishes in all the wrong cupboards. But it’s no big deal so just smile and enjoy those Gravy Boat Rescue Missions and Wooden Spoon Search Parties with a smile.

Yes, this one goes out to guests who wash the dishes even after we told them not to. Today we say thanks for love, thanks for the memories, and thanks for scrubbing the crusty casserole dish.

Our Final Sewing Day with the girls!

Today was the last day of our sewing camp with the girls and our final project was a notebook cover. Each girl picked out their own style of fabrics and away we went! This project was a little harder than the rest, but all the girls were able to finish and take their notebooks home. I took a bunch of pictures today and am sharing with you. Girls, I thoroughly enjoyed teaching you and look forward to seeing you in the summer! Great Job : )

This week I've had the most fun with 8 young ladies teaching them to sew. Some of them had never even touched a sewing machine before.

We started with the basics; threading a machine, winding a bobbin, correctly loading the bobbin in the machine, sewing a straight line, then to pivot, and finally cutting out patterns starting with a curling iron bag! The girls were very eager to learn and gave it all they had ending up with a completed bag the first day.
Above are pictures of the projects the girls have completed so far; a curling iron bag, a zippered top bag for small secrets or cosmetics, and a zippered handbag! Stay tuned tomorrow for their last project of the week.
We are already making plans for their next camp in the summertime!
Great job girls, we are all very proud of your hard work and best efforts. Our future seamstresses........

Trouble threading needles?

Found this tip while surfing....
Here is one threading solution, see if it works for you.......

My tip has to do with needles. I have arthritis, severe dry eye syndrome (which makes for really, really bad blurred and double even triple vision–ever tried to thread one needle when there are three in front of your eyes?) and glaucoma, so threading needles is always a challenge. I hate having to keep up with my standing needle threader plus you have to get the eye of the needle positioned just right to get it to thread properly. And the needles where you just pull the thread down into a slot from the top are usually too large for the 11-12 stitches per inch I strive for in my hand quilting… I was very grateful when a fellow quilter shared her threading technique, which works with even small-eyed needles.

So, after the above rambling preamble, here it is:

Put the eye of the needle in your mouth and wet it with your tongue, pull it out and thread your needle just as you would normally. What’s the secret? The moisture left in the eye draws the thread to it where the fabric of the thread acts as a wick and helps to draw it through the eye. Ta Da! The thread can be either wet or dry; I like to wet mine in my mouth first and flatten the end with my teeth. A variation of this works for those of us who still have not caught up with automatic sewing machine needle threading: wet the tip of your finger and place it behind the eye of your machine needle, then thread as usual; the moisture on your finger is now the attraction for the fabric of your thread.

Hopper Nancy has a great tip for making all of your rulers non-slip–simple nail polish and sand!
I love those quilt rulers with the anti skid spots, but have many other that don’t have those spots.
Solution: Put spots of clear nail polish on the back wherever you feel will help to hold it in place and sprinkle fine play sand on the wet polish. Tap the excess sand off and let it dry. Voila! You now have a non skid ruler.

HAPPY SPRING WEATHER, FINALLY, TO YOU ALL!!

Thanks to everyone who came out on National Quilting Day and enjoyed our store specials and the yummy treats provided! We had a Great time and wasn't the weather just perfect?

If you didn't noticed while you were there (I'm sure you couldn't help not to) we had one of our free handbag classes going on and boy were the ladies pleased with the end results.By far, this bag has been the most fun we've made ...above are some pics from the Thursday night and Saturday morning class...

And we were also visited by Ms. Linda again who never fails to amaze us with her creations. She had made a scarf dress set with matching pants out of our Lila Tueller "Eden" collection for Moda fabrics. The colors are to die for and tiny details she adds just put her outfits over the top! Any little girl would be lucky to wear them! Thanks for bringing your new creation in Linda, we so appreciate seeing them!

This Weekend coming up, March 27 and 28 at Camden High School, is a craft show put on by the 4-H club. Our shop and other local crafters will be participating. Make plans to come out and support the local 4-H club, its for a great cause. Hrs are 10-5 both days...See you there!

Thursday, March 11th The VS will be offering the "Out on the Town" Handbag class at 10 am. With springtime in mind, soft blues and lime greens are a perfect way to welcome a warm spring day which at this point I don't know about you but I am very READY for!

This bag is very roomy and will be made with acrylic handles which we have supplied in the shop. As always, the handbag class is free with purchase of fabrics at the Velvet Stitch. Pattern will be required ($5) bring your own machine and basic sewing notions including rotary cutter, ruler, sharp scissors and quilting pins (no short pins please, it doesn't hold the fabrics and interfacings together.) Creating and bringing her visions to life!
From scratch, she's created this 'Little Black Dress' out of black cotton. She's strung little black seed beads and hand sewn them to the dress as well as painted a patchwork like pattern (which is what looks shiny) in between the beads. On the back is a zipper from top to bottom! and yes she fits into this tiny little dress! Her creativity is amazing! Just goes to show you there are many projects that can be created with cottons!
Kudos to you girl! We're lookin for you on Project Runway!!

March Easy Patchwork Jacket

Many quilters are proud of their quilting skills, and they should be. What better way is there to tell others that you love quilting than by creating a jacket? In March, The Velvet Stitch will be offering this Easy Patchwork Jacket as a class on March the 5th and the 12th. Each session will start at 6pm. We will be using a Kwik Sew pattern, available at the shop. Students will be offered a 50% discount on the pattern and 15% discount on fabrics when purchased at the Velvet Stitch. The Bag-a-licious Club!

Well here it is, the first bag we will be making in January! I've made this Lazy Girl Designs bag, The Claire Handbag, with some of our new fabrics that have arrived in the shop thus far. The bag is super easy to make and sports 2 pockets on the outside as well as several pockets on the inside for all your needs. Claire and her handles stand up nice and tall, making this open-top tote great for a purse, tote or project bag. Make sure you sign up in the next week to ensure we have enough patterns for everyone. The first class will be held Thursday Janurary 21 from 6-9pm. Pattern required and the class is free if you purchase your fabric from The Velvet Stitch! If you'd rather make the bag in the comfort of your own home, we will have kits available for purchase in the shop. Girlfriend Groups are encouraged! Make arrangements for you and some of your girlfriends to get together in the shop to make the Claire bag. Call the shop for details and arrangements! Sewing requirements: must know how to work your machine, you must have a basic knowledge of sewing and have sewn in the recent past. Happy New Year to you all, I hope you all had happy holidays with your loved ones!

Can you believe its 2010? 2009 FLEW by!!! Where does the time go?

Well, we have some exciting things planned for the shop this year and are in the midst of planning and creating now! Our BOM for 2009 is coming to an end this weekend and the 2010 BOM is starting. Remember you have a choice to pick up your block on Saturdays or Mondays. We have added a surprise this year, I think you'll be pleased. Make sure you don't leave the store without it, it will be at the counter when you're ready to check out : ) Here is a picture of the finished 2009 quilt put together by Anne! Oh my Gosh what a great job she did putting this together, quite the challenge! Great Job Anne!!!!!

Our new fabrics have started to trickle in and are out on the floor ready for your choosing! Here's a preview of some that have arrived......

In the coming weeks we will be putting together several new kits with exciting fabrics so be sure and look for them in the shop.

Our new 'secret' section I mentioned in an earlier post should be complete around the end of January....very exciting ; )

We are also adding another basic quilting class for those who want to make a baby quilt for expectanting mothers, more on that once the quilt top has been completed.

For those of you that sew apparel, we have added a new section with several colors of differnt size lace!

Our inventory is also in the midst of being restocked so please bare with us as it arrives in the coming weeks.

I also had mentioned a New Club starting this year. It will be held on the third Thursday of every month. What is it you ask?

HANDBAG OF THE MONTH CLUB!!

"THE BAG-A-LICIOUS" CLUB!!

Each month a new pattern will be taught. Coordinating accessories and/or other types of accessories like cosmetic cases, curling iron bags, cell phone cases will also be offered as a class. Times/days for these will vary, Saturday classes will be offered. The cost of the Club is free when you purchase your fabric from the shop! Patterns WILL BE required. Sign ups start next week and the first bag will be displayed in the shop on Monday. The first class will be held on Thursday Jan 21 from 6-9pm. Handbags will be given levels of difficulty.

There are requirements for this club: (there always are, right?)
1. Prior sewing experience is required ...what is the definition of 'prior experience,' it means you have sewn recently (not 30 years ago) and you MUST know how to operate your machine. If you need a refresher course, we do offer a one on one class for 2 hrs and the cost is $20. Classes are held Tuesdays through Fridays 10-4. Appointments are required.
2. Basic sewing knowledge is required. If a specfic handbag is harder than another, you will be made aware of this prior to sign ups. Not all classes are for beginners.
3. Children are not allowed to wait in the store while mom attends class.
4. You must bring your own machine and basic sewing notions...pins, extra bobbins, rotary cutter.....if something special is required for class, I will make you aware of this prior to class.

If there is a specific bag that you and a group of your girlfriends would like to get together for, special arrangements can be made. Just call the shop and ask for Tiffany to make arrangements! We encourage girlfriend time!!

NEW Christmas Fabrics & Classes

Janet will be offering this breathtaking 2 part Table Topper class in October on the following dates: Fridays Oct 2 and 9, if you like to join us. Cost is $30 plus supplies, times are: 4-6pm! You must stop by the store to see this in person, it is truly awesome! We used Fall colors, but of course the choice is yours to make!

Our quilted wallet classes both are filled for this week, but will be offered again in October on the following dates: Thursday evening the 1st from 6-8pm and Thursday the 15th from 6-8pm. The cost is $12 and the supply list is in the shop. This wallet cost approximately $9.50 to make! compare THAT to Vera! These little wallets make great Christmas gifts!

The newest 'Retro" collection from RJR, 'Santa Town' includes this charming tree skirt, stockings, and coordinating fabrics in rich blues and reds to match! This is a close up of one of the pictures one the tree skirt. Below is a larger picture of the whole skirt. The stockings are hanging in the store over the fabric for you to see!

This lovely table runner is one of the newest classes we are offering. Place mats are also included in the pattern you will receive. Come on out and learn to make this table runner with Anne starting September 29th at 10-12pm. This is a 2-part class. Part two will be held on Oct the 6th same time 10-12pm. Cost is $20 plus materials. If you can't make it on the above dates, two other class will be offered on Oct.13th, 10-12pm and part 2 Oct. 20th 10-12pm and Oct .14th 6-8pm and part , Oct 21st -8pm. The picture to the right is one of our newest tree skirts from the 12 Days of Christmas collection made by South Seas! The colors are very vibrant with snowflakes, red dots, poinsettias, and turtle doves! The coordinating colors are also in the store including snowflakes, holly leaves, cream tonal with gold metallic and more! Add a ruffle to this beautiful skirt and you've got yourself a gorgeous tree skirt! Also in the collection is a Santa Panel, top left, with the same vibrant colors. Its a must see!
